Kobie Baker, private chef — Story From The Kitchen, Colleyville Texas

Twenty years of hospitality experience taught me that the food is never the point.

The point is what happens at the table because of it.

I've spent my career in rooms where the experience was the product. I've run operations across multi-unit businesses, managed operating budgets, and looked after members whose expectations were high and whose patience for excuses was not. What every one of those jobs came down to was the same thing: know what the guest is actually there for, then build everything backward from that.

It all started in a kitchen in Mississippi, watching my grandmother turn almost nothing into something that brought the whole family together. They were not cooking to impress anybody. They were cooking to gather people, and everything I do now still begins right there.

StoryFromTheKitchen came out of a simple observation. The best meals I've ever cooked weren't the most technically ambitious ones. They were the ones where I understood what the host was trying to do for the people at their table.

So that's where every menu starts now. Not with an ingredient. With your reason for gathering.

Then I cook to it.
